JERUSALEM (JWN)—The UN Security Council cannot reach a consensus over the Palestinian Authority’s statehood application, according to a draft report issued by the council on Tuesday.
“The committee was unable to make a unanimous recommendation to the Security Council,” said the draft report of the council’s committee on admitting new member states. It was issued to all 15 Security Council members.
If its conclusions remain unchanged, the four-page draft means that the US will not have to fulfill its promise to veto an affirmative vote, because the PA has failed to garner enough votes for even a symbolic victory.
Diplomats say it is becoming unlikely that the PA will still call for a vote in the Security Council, even though the US will probably not need to use its veto to block it. It is rumored that the Palestinians have so far secured only eight backers on the council.
