Israel's cyber defenses ranked among world's best

JERUSALEM (JWN)—The report of a study by the McAfee computer security company and the Security and Defense Agenda Think Tank ranked Israel as one of the world’s most secure countries in cyber defenses.

Notwithstanding recent attacks by pro-Palestinian hackers that temporarily jammed several key Israeli websites, the security study placed Israel in a similar position of protection to Finland and Sweden.

According to Tel Aviv University Prof. Yitzhak Ben-Yisrael, a senior security adviser to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel is bombarded with about 1,000 hacking attempts every minute. Fortunately, it is able to block most of them.

However, he warned that “a cyber-war can inflict the same type of damage as a conventional war,” bringing down power and water supplies “without firing a single bullet.”
