Yemen drone attack strikes Tel Aviv, killing 1 and injuring others

The Israel Defense Forces estimate that Yemeni Houthi rebels launched the overnight drone attack that struck Tel Aviv early Friday, according to Spokesman Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari.

Hagari said in a press briefing that the drone was an Iranian-made “Samad-3” model modified in Yemen to extend its range. It traveled over 2,000 km (1,242 miles), crossing southern Israel and approaching Tel Aviv from the Mediterranean Sea.

The IDF will conduct a thorough investigation of the attack in the coming days to enhance aerial defense systems and prevent similar incidents. The strike, which resulted in the death of one Israeli and injuries to eight others, occurred near the U.S. consulate in Tel Aviv.

An Israeli source told Saudi al-Hadath news channel that investigators are examining whether the consulate was the target. Hagari indicated that Israel may consider future strikes in Yemen, stating the IDF will determine the necessary offensive response against those threatening Israel in the days ahead.

Regarding another incident, Hagari mentioned in a statement that a drone shot down outside Israel’s eastern borders simultaneously with the Tel Aviv attack, saying, “We are investigating any possible connection between the two events.”

“Since the conflict began, numerous drones launched from Yemen have been intercepted. However, our defense is not foolproof,” he emphasized.

Hagari also commented on the attempted assassination of Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif, noting signs suggesting success in targeting Rafa’a Salameh. He added, “Hamas has not disclosed Deif’s fate.”

The drone strike, which shocked many Israelis unaccustomed to the direct impact of war in the central regions, also prompted opposition leader Yair Lapid to criticize the government.
