US supports limited IDF ground forces against Hezbollah in Lebanon

Following the IDF’s announcement early Tuesday that it has commenced targeted ground raids against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, the U.S. government expressed its support for these actions.

The IDF stated that the operations focus on targets in villages near the border that pose an immediate threat to northern Israeli communities. This military initiative comes amid heightened tensions in the region, following weeks of intensive IDF strikes on Hezbollah leadership and positions.

The White House National Security Council (NSC) endorsed the limited operations aimed at dismantling Hezbollah’s infrastructure but cautioned against the risks of mission creep, which could complicate Israel’s objectives. The NSC emphasized Israel’s right to defend its citizens while also advocating for a diplomatic resolution to ensure long-term stability in the region.

This announcement from Israel followed the U.S. confirmation of an increased military presence in the Middle East, including advanced warplanes such as F-15s, F-16s, and A-10s, which had previously been instrumental in countering Iranian threats. The bolstered U.S. assets are intended to deter any Iranian escalation in response to Israeli operations.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin affirmed support for Israel’s actions in Lebanon, stating that it is crucial to dismantle Hezbollah’s capabilities to prevent future attacks similar to those witnessed on October 7. He acknowledged the delicate balance of supporting Israel while stressing the need for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing conflict.

Iran’s response to the IDF’s operations remains uncertain. An Iranian official stated that while Iran would not deploy forces to assist its proxies in Lebanon or Gaza, he warned of potential repercussions for Israel’s actions against Iranian interests and resistance forces. The rhetoric from Iranian officials suggests a desire for retaliation, further escalating regional tensions.

The White House has indicated that an Iranian response is plausible, with National Security Communications Advisor John Kirby noting the importance of preparedness. He highlighted the U.S. military’s capability in the region to address any potential threats stemming from Iran’s actions.
