U.S. envoy and senior adviser to President Joe Biden Amos Hochstein met Monday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in a push to find a diplomatic solution to the situation on Israel’s northern border.
Hezbollah sharply escalated its attacks in recent weeks, but there was relatively quiet Sunday and Monday along the tense border. The group did not claim any attacks in the last 48 hours, after averaging more than 10 attacks against Israeli targets over recent months.
Hochstein told Israeli officials that the absence of an Israeli plan for the day-after strategy in the Gaza Strip significantly hampered the ability to reach an agreement with Hezbollah.
The Biden administration sees the approaching end of the IDF’s operation in Rafah as a potential turning point to lower tensions with Hezbollah if Israel acts accordingly, according to the report. Hochstein, also serving as special presidential coordinator for Global Infrastructure and Energy Security, has led U.S. mediation efforts to find a diplomatic solution and prevent a military conflict that could escalate into regional war.
Gallant and Hochstein held an extended one-on-one meeting followed by a bilateral discussion with professional teams, Gallant’s office said. Netanyahu’s office did not release details of the meeting. Hochstein is expected to continue his regional visit by traveling to Beirut, Lebanon, on Tuesday.
Residents of northern Israel and southern Lebanon experienced some peace over the past two days as Hezbollah largely suspended its attacks during the Muslim celebration of Eid al-Adha, the Feast of Sacrifice.
Lebanese reports said many residents of border areas used the unofficial truce to return home after fleeing due to rocket fire exchanges. Social media videos showed destruction in Hezbollah strongholds like Tayr Harfa, turned into launch sites by Hezbollah forces and repeatedly hit by Israeli retaliation
Hezbollah did not claim responsibility for any attacks but attempted three drone infiltrations into Israeli territory. The IDF said it shot down a drone off the coast of Acre on Monday morning.
Monday evening the IDF announced it had eliminated Mustafa Ayoub, a key operative in Hezbollah’s Nasser Unit’s rocket and missile array. Ayoub’s death brings Hezbollah’s death toll to at least 343 since it began attacking Israel last October.
