Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Herzi Halevi, and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar visited the Netzarim Corridor in the Gaza Strip on Tuesday to assess the progress of IDF operations.
99th Division Commander Yoav Broner and Maj.-Gen briefed the officials. Yaron Finkleman, head of the IDF Southern Command, at an observation point in the corridor, where they discussed ongoing military actions and the remaining challenges in the region.
During the visit, Netanyahu praised the IDF’s efforts in Gaza, emphasizing that the military had made significant progress in weakening Hamas’ military capabilities. He stressed that Israel’s ultimate goal is to prevent Hamas from maintaining control over Gaza. Netanyahu declared that the military was making “excellent progress” toward this objective, noting that Israel was now focusing on eradicating Hamas’ governing structures.
In addition to the military goals, Netanyahu highlighted the importance of securing the release of Israeli hostages taken by Hamas since the October 7 attack. He reiterated Israel’s commitment to recovering all hostages, alive or deceased.
Netanyahu issued a stern warning to those holding the captives, threatening severe consequences for any harm inflicted. He also offered those holding hostages a potential way out, promising safe passage for anyone who brings a hostage to Israel. Netanyahu also announced a $5 million reward for each hostage returned.
Following the remarks, Netanyahu conducted a further assessment with the Gaza Division, discussing operational achievements and the continued evolution of the war against Hamas. He commended the efforts of the IDF commanders and soldiers in the field, particularly the reservists, for their professionalism and determination. Netanyahu expressed particular gratitude for the families of reservists, acknowledging their critical support for the soldiers’ continued service in the conflict.
Reports from Channel 12 News indicated that during recent internal discussions, senior IDF officials conveyed a clear message to political leaders that continued military operations in Gaza, particularly in areas like Jabaliya, could endanger the lives of Israeli hostages.
IDF sources stated that many of the primary objectives in Jabaliya had been achieved, and the military could pivot to new goals set by political leadership. However, IDF leaders warned that expanding operations could jeopardize the safety of the hostages being held there. Despite this, the IDF continues to operate in Jabaliya, with plans to advance operations in the area on Tuesday.
