Israelis celebrate release of first three hostages from Hamas

Thousands of Israelis gathered in Tel Aviv’s Hostages Square to celebrate the return of three Israeli women held captive in Gaza for more than 15 months.

As a large screen displayed the announcement from Israel Defense Forces Spokesman Brig. Gen. Daniel Hagari confirming their release, the crowd erupted in applause and cheers. Chants filled the square, with people shouting the names of the freed hostages as footage showed Red Cross vehicles transporting them to IDF personnel for their return to Israel.

Demonstrators waved posters bearing the images of the released women, while others danced and sang. Many in the crowd released yellow balloons, symbolizing the ongoing campaign to bring home all hostages. Calls for the release of others still in captivity echoed through the gathering.

Family members of those still held in Gaza also participated in the celebration. Among them was Einav Zangauker, whose son, Matan Zangauker, remains in captivity. She has been a vocal advocate in protests pushing for a hostage release agreement.

The IDF later released a video capturing the emotional reactions of families upon hearing the news that their loved ones had been safely returned.

After reaching Israeli territory, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum described the return of the three women as a moment of hope and resilience. The organization emphasized the collective responsibility to continue efforts for the release of all hostages.

Near the military post where the women were received, crowds lined the roads waving Israeli flags and holding signs welcoming them home. Following an initial medical evaluation, the freed hostages were transported to Safra Children’s Hospital at Tel HaShomer Medical Center near Tel Aviv, where family members and hospital staff greeted them warmly.

Outside the hospital, supporters held banners and celebrated their return. Other patients also gathered in an attempt to glimpse the women as they reunited with their loved ones. Friends of one of the freed hostages, Emily Damari, assembled outside, wrapped in Israeli flags, singing and dancing.

Celebrations extended beyond Israel, with thousands gathering in New York City’s Central Park, waving Israeli flags and displaying signs celebrating the release. Israel’s national airline, El Al, also announced the news mid-flight, prompting applause from passengers.
