Israeli police stop ISIS terror plot in Jerusalem

In a joint statement released on Thursday by the Jerusalem District Police and the Shin Bet security agency, authorities announced the successful thwarting of planned terrorist attacks orchestrated by supporters of the Islamic State (ISIS) in East Jerusalem.

According to the report, two individuals were apprehended for their involvement in plotting to construct and detonate explosive devices, as well as carry out shooting attacks targeting a police station in East Jerusalem and another location near Jerusalem’s Teddy Stadium.

These suspects had been recruited by a fellow terrorist who had received training abroad from ISIS members, specializing in organizing and promoting terrorist activities within Israel.

Initial plans included both explosive detonations and shooting assaults. However, due to the failure of the explosives, the perpetrators pivoted their focus solely on executing a shooting attack.

For the past month, the Shin Bet and the Central Unit of the Jerusalem District Police had been conducting intensive investigations into this specific terror cell, suspecting their intent to inflict harm on Israelis.

Similar to previous incidents, the alleged attacks were intended to involve planting explosives and utilizing firearms under the guise of ISIS affiliation. Earlier, three individuals from East Jerusalem had been arrested on similar charges of ISIS allegiance and plotting attacks.

Through ongoing investigations, authorities uncovered the suspects’ allegiance to ISIS and their intentions to carry out multiple attacks in central Jerusalem.

Legal action against the two suspects is anticipated to commence with an indictment during prosecution proceedings.

Doron Turgeman, the Jerusalem District Police Commander, commended the collaborative efforts between the police and Shin Bet in combating terrorism, according to a report from the Jerusalem Post, emphasizing the importance of vigilance and cooperation in safeguarding the region against such threats.
