IDF says Hezbollah bunker under Beirut hospital held $500 million

On Monday evening, the IDF released previously classified intelligence about Hezbollah’s financial network, including the location of a secret bunker beneath al-Sahel Hospital in central Beirut, containing around $500 million in gold and cash.

This disclosure coincided with Israel’s intensified efforts to target Hezbollah’s economic infrastructure and military sites, as evidenced by recent strikes on the Al-Qard Al-Hassan bank.

The military indicated that the Al-Qard Al-Hassan association funds Hezbollah’s operations directly, covering weapon purchases and salaries for its military personnel. This organization also helps Hezbollah evade certain U.S. sanctions by maintaining a separate banking system from the Lebanese economy, with backing from Iranian funds.

While details of the Al-Qard Al-Hassan bank strikes were shared Monday morning, the specifics about the secret bunker were revealed later. The IDF spokesman emphasized the financial crisis in Lebanon, noting that the money in the bunker could be used to assist the country.

The spokesman also presented a map and a 3D model of the bunker beneath al-Sahel Hospital, stressing that Israel has no intention of striking it. He clarified that Israel’s conflict is with Hezbollah, not the citizens of Lebanon. He urged Lebanese citizens, the government, and international organizations to prevent Hezbollah from storing terrorist funds under a hospital.

Additionally, the IDF confirmed the elimination of the head of Hezbollah’s financial operations, who was responsible for transferring money from Iran to Lebanon, during a strike in Damascus, Syria. The individual had been in the role for only a few weeks following the previous leader’s death.

The IDF spokesman described the precise strikes on Hezbollah financial strongholds, stating that one of the main targets was an underground vault containing tens of millions of dollars in cash and gold, intended to finance attacks against Israel. He also indicated the existence of another bunker that had not been targeted, located directly under al-Sahel Hospital.
