IDF destroys largest tunnel discovered in northern Gaza

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the destruction of the largest terror tunnel uncovered in northern Gaza since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict.

This operation, carried out on Tuesday morning, marks a crucial milestone in the ongoing efforts to neutralize threats posed by Hamas. The tunnel, stretching approximately four kilometers and terminating near the Erez crossing, did not breach Israeli territory. Its discovery dates back to mid-December of 2023.

Over recent weeks, the IDF diligently investigated the tunnel’s intricate network, culminating in a joint effort involving the engineering unit of the IDF’s Gaza Division, the Yahalom unit, the IDF’s Southern Command, and the Defense Ministry’s engineering and construction division.

Exploration operations revealed that the tunnel reached depths of about 50 meters, with its closest shaft situated approximately 400 meters from the Erez crossing—a vital passage utilized by workers and medical patients seeking treatment in Israel.

The tunnel boasted several branches, forming an extensive network with essential infrastructures such as sewage, electricity, and communication systems. Strategically placed top doors aimed to thwart IDF incursions. This elaborate tunnel system facilitated vehicular movement and concealed numerous weapons belonging to Hamas.

Through ground maneuvers and intelligence operations, the IDF gleaned valuable insights into Hamas’ clandestine tunneling activities, enhancing its understanding and mapping of the underground network.

Since the onset of hostilities, the IDF has tirelessly endeavored to locate and dismantle dozens of attack tunnel routes, systematically dismantling Hamas’ infrastructure. The construction project involved a team of militants from Khan Yunis, underscoring the coordinated efforts behind Hamas’ subterranean endeavors.

Reports from Maariv suggest using specialized digging machinery smuggled into the Strip for tunnel construction purposes. Furthermore, it is estimated that Hamas allocated substantial financial resources to underground projects throughout the Gaza Strip, with offensive operations against Israeli forces being orchestrated from within these now-obliterated tunnels.

Recent encounters within the tunnel led to the elimination of terrorists by IDF forces, highlighting the ongoing security challenges posed by Hamas’ subterranean infrastructure.
