Israeli ambassador returns to Jordan

AMMAN (JWN and JTA) — Ambassador Daniel Nevo returned to his post in the Jordanian capital on Friday, just two days after Israel Embassy staff were recalled as a safety precaution in advance of a planned protest march against the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty.

It had been feared that the protest, billed as a “million man march,” would develop into violence similar to the recent ransacking of Israel’s Cairo embassy. Instead of a million, only some 200 marchers turned up and the event passed peacefully.

In Cairo, however, six embassy security guards had to be rescued by Egyptian commandos as a mob broke down a security wall and invaded the embassy. They were rushed in disguise to the airport, where they joined a flight evacuating some 80 embassy personnel. Israel’s Cairo embassy has not yet reopened.
